Thinking back to our first vacation, just Mitch and I… it’s where it all started. We went to Memories Caribe Beach Resort in Cayo Coco, Cuba on an all inclusive vacation in August of 2014. Our first trip as a couple and Mitch’s first time out of the country!
We were living in our first apartment and saved up enough money to travel to a beach-y international destination. We searched for last minute vacation deals with many websites, but the one we chose was Redtag. Before booking we took a look online at all of the reviews on Tripadvisor, which has tons and tons of real reviews, and traveler taken photos. If you’re in search of reviews on the hotel you’re going to stay at or even excursions, we highly recommend checking out this website.
Anyways, we drove 6 hours to our nearest international airport which was the Toronto Pearson Airport. We used Park N’ Fly which we’ve used countless times, and would recommend. We had a non-stop flight to Cuba on Sunwing, which was enjoyable.
When we arrived in Cuba, we were both quite surprised when the heat hit us for the first time! Our bus ride was about an hour long with many sites and resort stops on the way. Our arrival to Memories Caribe Beach Resort was literally unforgettable. The staff sung and gave out a welcome drink. I will never forget the excitement that came from both of us.
Our room was a townhouse type villa, so there were two apartments on either side. The best part? We had a private outdoor shower. The rooms were clean, we had new towel art every day, and the garden was well kept outside of our room.
We had a really great week. Mitch had an abundance of his favourite drinks- strawberry daiquiri’s, the pool bar served churro’s (yum!), and of course we went on a million excursions. It was our first vacation- we wanted to try it all!
The first excursion we went on was called Jeep On by Sunwing. We drove our own jeep, which led us to a local restaurant and bar. From there we went to a crocodile farm, where we fed the crocodiles and held a baby one. On the excursion we seen how sugar cane is extracted and had a lovely Cuban meal of beans and rice cooked by locals.
We also went on a speedboating excursion. Which was one of our favourites! We got to go speedboating and snorkelling. Mitch touched a barracuda on the back, not knowing what it was. If you ever go to Cayo Coco, and you’re in the market for a thrill-seeking water adventure, check it out.
Another excursion we went on was the glass bottom boat. We touched a star fish for the first time, jumped off a boat in the Caribbean, went snorkelling in the clear waters of Cuba, and met a few friends.
Cuba was great! It taught us a lot, and it sparked a huge love for travel in both of us.
